Iceland with the Greene family, September/October, 1997

A normal street found in Keflavik, Iceland.

Another Keflavik street!

My wife, Elin was born in this house, the beige house in the room on the second floor on the right hand side!!

Jeremiah's favorite place, the pool in Keflavik where he went whenever he could.

As you can see, it is an open air pool. It is about 50 or so in the air, but 85 or so in the pool!

This is the Keflavik harbor with what is probably a fishing boat in the distance.

The extreme eastern tip of Keflavik has this lighthouse.

This is the dockwall that protects the ships docked and extends a long way protecting from the angry waves. The ships park at this dock, offload their fish, and it is at market no more than an hour later! This is FRESH fish!

Another view of the protecting wall

This is a good look at the waves before they break on shore, whitecaps that explode. The wind on this day is about 80mph and it was very difficult to take these pictures.

The mountains are beautiful!

More mountains!

Before descending to the town below where my sister-in-law graduated from horticulture school, we stopped in this parkway, took a picture. In the back of Jeremiah and his grandmother is a 300' drop!

We stayed at a rental cabin for a week outside of Selfoss. This is the lava road to the cabin. On the sides of the road are fields that Iceland hopes will grow into a forest. These are berry trees that are planted.

Jeremiah is holding the wall up in the rain.

Following a grueling day of Bible study, we are relaxing and "cutting up" a bit.

My first morning at the cabin, I arose for prayer, but this bird which I called a burpy-bird was screeching making it difficult for prayer until I decided to use him for music to the Lord. He had 4-5 friends that aren't in the picture. A little creative wouldn't you agree?

This is the lake where Eric the Red started Iceland's first parliment. The extreme overcast made most of the pictures dark, so please look closely.

A glacier melting for centuries feeds this falls that flows into the lake.

The volcanic activity has been extensive in Iceland and this crack divides Iceland, the island and in parts filled with lava that has become fertile and filled with vegetation, as well as other parts it has filled with water.

Here is another glacial river. Pay close attention to the sediment in the water making it a dingy color.

We are in Geyser and if you look closely, you'll see the steam that is coming out of the ground.

Here is the beginning of a blow!

The next stage of a blow!

This blow is about 1/2 of Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park.

A little double exposed, but these are special bred horses found only in Iceland, and notice in the background a house that is roofed with grass sod! This was common for centuries.

Here is the geothermal plant for Keflavik in the distance. All the hot water and steam for heating comes from here for Keflavik, and it is naturally heated by underground geothermic activity.

The dregs of the geothermal plant pooled and has become well known across the world as the Blue Lagoon where tourists from all over the world visit for the "healing" virtues that are found in the water for many skin diseases. The water is sold in bottles, the site has a huge hotel, and there is a tourist shop for souvenirs. This lagoon is very, very warm, and the steam keeps the temperatures of the air around 85 or so. Where we are standing out of the steam it is about 45 or so!
